1929 Born in Matsumoto, Nagano, Japan. 1949 Studied at the Kyoto Municipal Arts and Crafts School. 1957 moved to America. 1963 Got permanent residency in USA. 1973 Returned to Japan, Live and work in Tokyo. From her youth, Kusama has painted polka dots and net as motif. Studied Nihonga at Kyoto City University of Arts. After going to the USA in 1957, she made huge two-dimensional works, soft sculptures, and environmental sculptures. Along with conducting happenings such as body paintings and anti-war movements in the late 60’s, she did solo exhibitions in Europe and the USA in the 80’s and 90’s. She participated in the Venice Biennale as the representative of Japan in 1993. From the late 90’s, received numerous art awards, and retrospective exhibitions were organized around the world. In 2012, Kusama’s large scale exhibitions in major museums, such as Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, Tate Modern in London, Moscow Museum of Modern Art and more, have ended in a great success.She was awarded the Order of Culture in 2016.Yayoi Kusama exhibition "My eternal soul" will be held in the National Museum in February 2017 and it will be the largest exhibition from the past.
