1923 Born in Kohoku, Kochi, Japan. 1949 Graduated from the department of sculpture at Tokyo Fine Arts School (now Tokyo University of the Arts). After graduation, he went back to Kochi and taught at Tosa High School. In 1951, he started exhibiting at the Modern Art Association Exhibition. He won the newcomer prize in 1954 and joined the association in 1957. As a member of the Gutai group, joining in 1966 until their dissolution in 1972, he joined numerous of exhibitions. He was also one of the members participating in Gutai’s first showcase in America, the “1st Japan Art Festival” in 1965, alongside Sadamasa Motonaga, Kazuo Shiraga, and Jiro Yoshihara. In 1963, he became famous by creating the series Apparatus, in which pieces of curled up squares of canvas pasted in a grid pattern. From the work Stick, being exhibited in 1971 at the 10th Contemporary Art Exhibition of Japan, we could know that after experiencing the period of nailing the lead boards on wall and floor, which showed a strong tendency of performing Installation arts, Takasaki once again worked on the Apparatus series. Since he has devoted himself to promote the development of contemporary art in Kochi, he received the Kochi Prefecture Cultural Award in 1996.
