BI
Born in 1937 in Kanagawa, Japan. He studied oil painting at Musashino Art School (now Musashino Art University). In 1958 he displayed his work for the first time at the 10th Yomiuri Independent Exhibition. Since then, his works were displayed at the exhibition every year until the exhibition came to an end in 1964. In 1963 he formed “Hi-Red Center” with Jiro Takamatsu and Natsuyuki Nakanishi (taking the first kanji from their names). “Hi-Red Center” created artworks and performed radical art events. By printing a one thousand yen note and publishing it as an artwork, he was sued for violating the Act on Control of Imitation Currency and Securities. On the other hand, the “Great Japanese zero yen note” which was created during the trial had not brought another lawsuit and became one of his representative works. He worked in many genres such as painting, comics and novels. However, his aim was always to bring up a new point of view or finding something humorous from ordinary things and phenomenon. He wrote a book “Elderly Power” (1998) which brought up a positive side of getting old like being more forgetful, became a bestseller. He died of Sepsis in October 2014.
