< Early works by Gallé >
Émile Gallé's works (Lot 001 to 017) are Gallé's early works produced mainly in the late 1870s and 1890s. The characteristics of Gallé's works produced during this period were the clear or amber glass base, the colorful enamel decoration, and the preformed glass blobs called “Applied decoration". The technique of welding the motif to the substrate is used (e.g. lot 006 and 007 to 009). In addition, the light blue substrate used in lot 011 and lots 079 and 090 that appear in the second half is a special glass called moonlight glass (Claire de lune). Moonlight glass made use of the coloring of cobalt oxide and made it possible to create beautiful colors just like the light of the moon. Gallé presented this at the Paris World Exposition of 1878 and received a great response. After that, this method became popular in European countries, and it was sold under the name "moonlight glass" in Britain and "Mondshein" in Germany, which means moonlight. In Lot015 to 017, "uranium glass" that uses uranium as the base material is used. When irradiated with black light, the trace amount of uranium compound contained in the base material reacts and emits a beautiful fluorescent green light. As you can see, the early works show the path of Gallé's trial and error as a glass artist, these attractive products are full of Gallé's creativity.
