This work was painted in 1961, which is the early stage in KATO Hajime’s art career. KATO is a unique painter, since he was a professional cyclist before he chose to be a painter, but he never hesitated in his art career. He decided to visit France for determining his style on painting and pursuing his potential in 1958 when he was 33th, and devoted himself to painting for 42 years in Paris. This work was created after he held his first solo exhibition in DUNCAN Art Gallery in 1960, Paris. In 1960s, KATO learned by trial and error to create his own style, expressed the gravity and smoothness by using palette knife to overlay the oil paints thickly. His effects and passion spent on creating his style can be seen from the overlapping oil paints.
KATO’s style is based on abstract painting that overlapping different colors and thickness of relaxation curves to express “wind” and “light”, he said about his work as “The expression came from the experience of being professional cyclist.” After this work, his feature of painting in 1970s was the flying curve and thin layer of transparent paint. And in 1980s-1990s, his style of expressing light and wind by flying curve was established.
