A noble art print made by George Segal. Although Segal was famous for his plaster figures, he started his art career as a painter.
Segal was born in New York, 1924. He graduated from New York University, majored in art. Though he would like to be a painter, he abandoned at that time. He carried on his family chicken farm after graduation, and restarted his creation. Segal pioneered the use of plaster bandages as a sculptural medium to wrap a model, created the sculpture of figure with clothed, which showed the emptiness in regular life and the human’s appearance. He also held exhibitions in Japan sometimes.
Segal started from painter and combined painting with sculpture finally. This work can be felt in different ways based on his lifetime. His superior technique is showed from the closed painted lines, and the shape of human is more delicate in painting than sculpture, which may show his concern about figure in this work. Moreover, the lineage of Rembrandt and Redon can be felt through the emphasized light and darkness by using etching, aquatint and drypoint. Above all, it is a rare work which showed the ability of painter Segal.
