HIGHLIGHT

<Art Deco Sculpture>
Art Deco began in France in the 1920s, following the Art Nouveau style and then spread throughout Europe and America. While Art Nouveau is known for its organic, flowing designs, Art Deco, inspired by the age of industrialization, focused on simplified, stylized motifs with geometric patterns and straight lines.One well-known form in Art Deco is the "chryselephantine" sculpture. Originally, chryselephantine referred to ancient Greek sculptures made with gold and ivory. In the Art Deco period, it referred to sculptures using a mix of materials like bronze, silver, lacquer, and tortoiseshell.A typical subject of Art Deco chryselephantine sculptures is a graceful, idealized woman dancing in detailed, beautiful clothing. These statues represented the owner’s status and wealth, though many were later dismantled or melted down for their valuable materials.In this sale, works by two famous chryselephantine artists Ferdinand Preiss and Demetre Chiparus will be featured. Preiss, a German sculptor, portrayed naturalistic women in scenes of sports and theater, blending classical beauty with a modern feel. Chiparus, a Romanian sculptor, is known for his decorative style, using slender ivory figures dressed in detailed bronze costumes. We warmly invite you to our auction to experience and acquire the refined elegance and bold artistry of the Art Deco era.
